Measure from the floor to the underside of your counter, not to the top surface, then subtract 10 to 12 inches for legroom. Allow 26 to 30 inches of counter width per stool, measured centre to centre. Stools with backs need the wider end of that range, backless the narrower. A 6 foot island seats three, an 8 foot island seats four.
Crowding in an extra stool is the most common planning mistake we see. People end up with elbows touching at mealtimes and one seat nobody chooses — three comfortable stools get used far more than four cramped ones.
