What bar height means
A bar height stool has a seat 29 to 32 inches from the floor. It is made for a 41 to 43 inch bar — the height of a home bar, a pub table, or a raised counter ledge.
This is the taller of the two standard stool heights sold in Canada, and it is the less common one in homes, because most kitchen islands are built to counter height instead. Bar height belongs to purpose-built bars: a basement bar, a games room, a raised ledge behind a kitchen island, or a pub table in a dining area.
Getting this distinction right is the single most common ordering mistake in the category. A bar height stool at a kitchen counter leaves the sitter perched above the surface with no legroom underneath; a counter height stool at a home bar leaves them reaching up to it. Neither is fixable after delivery, which is why the measuring section below matters more than any style decision on this page.
Telling a bar from a counter
Measure from the floor to the underside of the surface. If it is 41 to 43 inches, you have a bar and these are the right stools. If it is 35 to 37 inches, you have a standard kitchen counter and need counter height stools with 24 to 27 inch seats.
Counter height is the more common of the two in Canadian homes, so measure rather than assume — most kitchen islands take kitchen bar stools at the lower height. The word "bar" in "breakfast bar" is the source of most of the confusion: a breakfast bar built flush with the kitchen counter is counter height, not bar height, regardless of what it is called.
If you are buying for a surface that already has stools you are happy with, measure the seat height of those rather than the counter. That is the fastest way to order a matching set.
Legroom at bar height
You want 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside of the bar. Less and knees hit the surface; more and the stool sits too low to eat or drink comfortably. A 42 inch bar therefore takes a seat of roughly 30 to 32 inches.
Legroom is more sensitive at bar height than at counter height, because the sitter's feet are further from the floor and the footrest is carrying more of the load. An inch of error that would be tolerable at a kitchen counter is noticeable at a bar.
Check what is under the bar as well as its height. A thick countertop, an apron rail, or a support bracket under the overhang all reduce the usable clearance, and the measurement that matters is to the lowest obstruction, not to the underside of the counter surface.
If your ledge is higher than 43 inches
A raised ledge of 45 to 47 inches needs a spectator height stool with a 33 to 36 inch seat. This is a specialist size, most often found in home theatres and games rooms, and few Canadian retailers stock it. Contact us for current availability.
Spectator height exists because of a specific architectural feature: a raised viewing ledge behind a lower seating area, designed so people at the ledge can see over those in front. If that describes your room, an ordinary bar stool will be several inches short, and the difference is obvious once installed.

Bars are more often run against a wall than islands are, which means the stools are approached from one side only and people pass behind them. Leave at least 36 inches of walkway behind the stools if that is a route through the room, measured with the stools pulled out rather than tucked in.
