The height range a gas lift covers
Most gas lift stools travel roughly 6 inches, typically from about 24 up to 30 inches. That covers counter height in full and the lower end of bar height from a single stool.
The figure that matters is the travel range, not the maximum. A stool advertised as reaching 30 inches that starts at 24 is genuinely flexible. One that travels from 28 to 33 inches is a bar stool with some adjustment, not a stool that will also work at a kitchen counter. Check both ends of the range against the surfaces you actually have before ordering.
Adjustment is continuous rather than stepped on a gas lift, so you are not limited to preset heights — the seat stops wherever you release the lever. That makes it straightforward to match an existing set or to fine-tune the legroom until it feels right.
When adjustable beats a fixed height
Three situations make adjustable the better buy.
The first is ordering before the counter is installed. If you are mid-renovation and the island height is not final, an adjustable stool removes the risk of a set arriving at the wrong height for a counter that shifted by an inch during the build.
The second is one counter used by both adults and children. A seat that drops for a child doing homework and rises for an adult eating breakfast gets used by everyone, where a fixed height suits one group and excludes the other.
The third is a home with both a 35 to 37 inch island and a 41 to 43 inch raised bar. Adjustable stools let you run one matching set across both levels instead of buying two different sets that never quite coordinate.
Where none of those apply and the counter height is fixed and known, a fixed-height stool is the simpler and usually sturdier choice — there is one fewer mechanism to maintain.
Checking the stool reaches your bar
Read the stated travel before ordering. A stool topping out at 28 inches will sit low at a 41 to 43 inch bar, where a fixed bar height stool with a 29 to 32 inch seat is the better fit.
For a standard 35 to 37 inch counter, any adjustable stool here reaches comfortably — though a fixed counter height stool is the simpler choice if the counter will never change. Measure to the underside of the surface and subtract 10 to 12 inches to find the seat height you are aiming for, then confirm that number sits inside the stool's travel range rather than at the very top of it. A stool used permanently at its maximum extension is working harder than one used mid-range.
How the mechanism works
A sealed gas cylinder raises and lowers the seat using a lever under the seat pan. Lifting the lever with weight on the seat lowers it; lifting it with the seat empty raises it. The cylinder is pressurised at manufacture and is not user-serviceable, which is why quality at purchase matters more than maintenance afterwards.
It needs no maintenance, but it lasts longer on a stool with a footrest, because the footrest takes standing weight off the cylinder during use. Every adjustable stool in this collection has one.
The failure mode to know about is seat drift — a seat that slowly sinks under weight. That is a cylinder losing pressure, and it cannot be repaired, only replaced. It is the clearest reason to buy a cylinder from a known supplier rather than the cheapest available, and it is why we specify the components rather than leaving it to the lowest bidder.
Stability and other features
Look for a base diameter close to the seat width. A narrow base under a tall seat is what makes a cheap adjustable stool feel unsteady; five-star and heavy round bases are the most stable, and the extra weight in the base is doing real work.
Most adjustable stools also swivel, since the two mechanisms share a housing — see swivel bar stools. They are available with backs for dining-length sitting and backless where the kitchen is tight, though note that a backless adjustable stool at full extension is the least stable combination and suits lighter use.
Check the castors or glides too. Fixed glides are the steadier choice at a counter; castors suit a stool that moves between a desk and an island but should be lockable if children use the kitchen.
Materials and finishes
Faux leather is the practical seat material on an adjustable stool because the seat gets handled every time the height changes, and it wipes clean in seconds. Fabric and boucle suit stools used mainly for dining; choose a tight weave near the cooking zone.

Spacing and planning
Allow 26 to 30 inches per stool, centre to centre. Adjustable stools need the wider end where they also swivel. Keep at least 10 inches of counter overhang for knees, and 15 inches where people eat full meals.
One planning point specific to adjustable stools: a row set at different heights looks untidy in a way a row of fixed stools never does. If the stools are visible from a living space, expect to reset them to a common height periodically, or choose fixed heights if that will irritate you.

Looking after an adjustable stool
Wipe faux leather and sealed wood with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Vacuum fabric seats regularly rather than waiting for marks. Keep the exposed section of the gas column clean and dry — grit on the column is drawn into the seal as the seat moves, and that is what shortens a cylinder's life in practice.
Once a year, tighten the fixings between the seat and the mechanism housing, and check the base fixings at the same time. On an adjustable stool the load path runs through more joints than on a fixed one, so there is more to keep tight.
Lower the seat to its minimum when the stools are not in use for a long period. A cylinder held at full extension is under more load than one at rest, and stools stored extended over a winter are the ones that come back with drift.
