How many stools fit at a kitchen island
Allow 26 to 30 inches of counter width per stool, measured centre to centre. A 6 foot island seats three comfortably and an 8 foot island seats four.
Squeezing in an extra stool is the most common mistake we see: people end up with elbows touching and one seat nobody uses. The arithmetic is tempting — a 6 foot island is 72 inches, and four stools at 18 inches each appears to fit — but 18 inches is the width of the stool, not the space a person needs around it. Plan on the centre-to-centre figure and you will get a row that works at mealtimes.
Stools with backs need the wider end of the range, because the backrest stops them tucking fully under the overhang and people need room to get in and out past it. Backless stools sit at the narrower end, which is often what allows a fourth seat at a 6 foot island.
Overhang and knee room
You need at least 10 inches of counter overhang for knees, and 15 inches if people will eat full meals at the island. Below 10 inches the stools cannot tuck in properly and the walkway behind them narrows, which is what makes a kitchen feel cramped at the counter even when the room itself is large.
Measure the overhang from the face of the island panel to the edge of the counter. If you are still at the design stage, this is the single specification worth arguing for with a kitchen fitter: an extra two inches of overhang costs very little at build time and cannot be added afterwards.
Leave at least 36 inches of walkway behind the stools where people pass, measured with the stools pulled out rather than tucked in. In a galley kitchen where that is not achievable, backless stools that slide fully under the counter are the practical answer.
Which height a kitchen island takes
Most kitchen islands are 35 to 37 inches high and take counter height stools with 24 to 27 inch seats. A raised breakfast bar at 41 to 43 inches takes bar height stools with 29 to 32 inch seats.
Measure to the underside of the counter and subtract 10 to 12 inches. Do not go by the name of the feature — a "breakfast bar" built flush with the kitchen counter is counter height, and that mislabelling is behind most wrong-height orders in this category.

Where you do want the stools to recede, match the wall or the flooring rather than the island itself. That keeps the room calm without flattening the island into the background.
Count the finishes already in the kitchen before adding one. Most kitchens carry three: cabinetry, counter, and hardware. A stool that picks up one of those three will look considered; a fourth new finish rarely does.
