What a counter stool is
A counter stool has a seat 24 to 27 inches from the floor and is made for a 35 to 37 inch counter or island. It is the most common stool height sold in Canada, because it matches standard kitchen cabinetry.
You will also see the same stool called a countertop stool, a kitchen counter stool, an island stool or a counter height stool — all four describe this height class, and there is no difference between them. If a listing anywhere gives a seat height between 24 and 27 inches, it is a counter stool whatever the name on the label.
The one term that does mean something different is bar height. A bar stool has a 29 to 32 inch seat and belongs at a 41 to 43 inch bar. Mixing the two up is the most common ordering error in this category, and the measuring section below is the way to avoid it.
Measuring for a counter stool
Measure from the floor to the underside of the countertop, then subtract 10 to 12 inches. That gap is what gives comfortable legroom, and it is the only measurement that decides which stool you need. A 36 inch counter therefore takes a seat of roughly 24 to 26 inches, which sits inside the 24 to 27 inch counter class.
If your surface is 41 to 43 inches you have a bar rather than a counter, and need bar height stools with 29 to 32 inch seats. If it is 45 to 47 inches you have a raised ledge and need spectator stools at 33 to 36 inches. Measure to the lowest obstruction rather than to the counter surface. A thick stone top, an apron rail or a support bracket under the overhang all reduce the usable clearance, and the stool has to clear whichever is lowest.
Choosing by how long people sit
The single most useful question before choosing a counter stool is how long people will actually sit on it. Twenty minutes and under, almost anything works. An hour at a time, and back support stops being a style choice.
A counter stool with a back supports dining-length meals and is the right choice where the island is where the family eats. A backless counter stool tucks fully under the overhang in a tight kitchen and keeps sightlines clear across an open-plan room.

A footrest is not a detail. At counter height the feet do not reach the floor, so the footrest takes the strain off the lower back during a long sitting, and it keeps shoes off the cabinet fronts where wear shows first. Every stool in this collection has one.
On adjustable and swivel models, check that the base diameter is close to the seat width. A narrow base under a tall seat is what makes a cheap stool feel unsteady.
Spacing
Allow 26 to 30 inches per stool, centre to centre, and at least 10 inches of counter overhang for knees — 15 inches if people will eat full meals at the counter. Stools with backs need the wider spacing; backless stools fit at the narrower end.
A 6 foot island comfortably seats three counter stools with backs, or four backless. Crowding in an extra seat is the most common planning mistake in the category, and the seat that suffers is always the middle one.
Counter stools in rooms other than the kitchen
Counter height is not only a kitchen measurement. Home offices with a standing-height desk, laundry rooms with a raised folding counter, and workshop benches are all commonly built at 35 to 37 inches, and all take the same 24 to 27 inch seat.

Looking after them
Wipe faux leather and sealed wood with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Vacuum fabric seats regularly rather than waiting for marks. Once a year, tighten the fixings on the footrest and the seat plate — that is where daily use concentrates.
Check the floor glides annually too. Worn glides scratch hardwood and tile, and replacing them is far cheaper than refinishing a floor.
